The book’s forty chapters are structured on the questions and answers given in the Catechism of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, which were designed to prepare Confirmation candidates with the rudiments of the Christian faith before examination by the bishop. But my meditations on those questions goes further than rote repetition of doctrine. King Oswald’s Heirs takes us to the deeper roots of English Christianity, drawing on the lives of the saints of the British isles, and further still, the apostolic seeds from which they flowered.
If you enjoy the symbolic biblical studies of Peter Leithart and Jonathan Pageau and the angelology and demonology of Frs de Young and Damick of Lord of Spirits fame, but have struggled to find their insights expressed in a specifically English cultural frame patent of Anglican doctrine, then this book will speak to you. King Oswald’s Heirs highlights the continuity of the post-Reformation Church of England with the English Catholicism of old and the apostolic patrimony, not only in doctrine, but in spirituality, liturgy and biblical typology.
King Oswald’s Heirs reminds English-speaking Christians that, whatever the present troubles and infidelities Anglicans face in their churches today, we have inherited a great Christian tradition of our own, with our own saints, martyrs, mystics, musicians, theologians, priests and poets, both before and since the Reformation. The English Christian inheritance equals that of any church, East or West. We need to reawaken to the glories it contains, for the restoration of the apostolic faith among Anglicans, but also for the edification and glory of God’s whole Church.
I pray that this, my latest book, may inspire in you new depths of faith in Christ, supported by the prayers and witness of the saints of England and the British isles.
